The Role of the Nurse Practitioner
Lucy Howlett is a registered nurse who has completed additional training at degree level to attain the qualification of Nurse Practitioner (NP). This qualification enables Lucy to assess, diagnose and treat common illnesses and ailments. The following list details some of the common reasons for consulting the NP, but is by no means exhaustive:
- Urine infection/cystitis
- Sore throat
- Ear infections
- Eye infections/trauma
- Chest infection
- Minor injuries (sprained ankle, back strain etc)
- Skin rashes/infections
- Lumps and swellings (excludes breast lumps)
- Hay fever or allergies
Additional tests, such as blood tests, swabs and blood pressure can normally be carried out by Lucy at the same time.
Should medication be recommended for your condition, Lucy will liaise with the GP on duty to arrange a prescription. This can usually be collected immediately after your consultation.
Using the NP to support your Long-term Health
In addition to acute illnesses, Lucy can help with advice on healthy lifestyle choices and the specific management of longterm conditions, for example:
- Weight loss
- Diet and exercise
- Hypertension (raised blood pressure)
- Diabetes
- Heart Disease
- Hypothyroidism
- Depression
